Umi Ryuuzaki - the water wanderer

November 19, 2009

Umi Ryuuzaki

Birthday: March 3 (Pisces)

Umi Ryuuzaki (龍咲 海 Ryūzaki Umi?) is elegant with dark blue eyes and long, flowing blue hair. She is an only child of rich parents, the two of which dote on her mercilessly and for whom she has great affection. A fencing champion, she is quick-tempered and at first uncaring (though perhaps the best-suited for the task at hand), as well as the most reluctant of the three Magic Knights: she is under great pressure to attend a fencing contest and is unsure of the land of Cephiro. Umi tends to go slightly ballistic at times, and provides a bit of comic relief during her fights with Mokona. Initially she seems to dislike Mokona, and even when she does become fond of him, occasionally still seems annoyed by his behaviour. However, Umi is very dedicated to Hikaru and Fuu, wanting nothing more to save Cephiro and return home. She uses water-based spells called Water Dragon and Azure Hurricane.

Romantically, Umi is not involved with anyone in the manga, despite the hints of Ascot’s affection for her (and Mokona’s resulting attempts to set them up). In the anime, however, Umi falls in love with Clef. Her feelings appear to be returned, though this isn’t entirely clarified. She’s friends with Tatra and Tarta, the princesses of Chizeta, whom she defeated in sword fights at different points in the second story arc. During the same arc, Umi appears to be slightly more mature and even grows somewhat closer to Clef and Ascot and the others.

In the manga, she is apparently a fan of Häagen-Dazs ice cream, Denny’s, and MOS Burger (she becomes panicked at the thought that Cephiro does not have any of these–similar to Miaka Yūki in Fushigi Yūgi, who, upon hers and her best friend’s arrival at another world, complains the absence of her favourite restaurants). The brand names were removed from the anime dialogue, presumably to avoid copyright infringement.

Also known as Marina Ryuuzaki in foreign-language dubs.

Curiously, her parents have a minor cameo in Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, another Clamp series that has many crossovers.

Voiced by Wendee Lee, Daisy May Carino, Gladys Parra and Konami Yoshida.

Umi Ryuuzaki (龍咲 海 Ryūzaki Umi) is a fictional character from the anime/manga series Magic Knight Rayearth (created by Clamp). She is one of the three protagonists of the series, and represents the element of Water. Umi is a tall, elegant, yet a bit of a short-tempered girl with flowing long blue hair. She’s voiced by Konami Yoshida in the Japanese version of the anime and Wendee Lee in the English version.

Season 1

Like the other two main characters, Umi was also on a school trip to Tokyo Tower, her school consisted mostly of girls - daughters of rich people like herself. At one moment, she suddenly heard voices calling her, referring her as a Magic Knight. In that moment, she was transported to another world, Cephiro, along with two other girls from different schools, Hikaru Shidou and Fuu Hououji.

The girls met Master Mage Clef, who was made fun by an irritated Umi, due to his size (despite being extremely old). When Clef told them the plight of Cephiro, which started from the imprisonment of Princess Emeraude by High Priest Zagato, and the only way to save her is that the three girls must become Magic Knights, Umi initially refused, pressured with the fact that she had to attend a fencing tournament by the next week. However, the girls were soon sent away to escape Zagato’s minion, Alcyone, after Clef instructed them to go meet Presea at the Forest of Silence. Alcyone gave pursuit, but was driven away by Hikaru. Without any other choice left, Umi decided to tag along.

After being sent to the Legendary Spring of Eterna by Presea to obtain the Escudo Minerals, along with a white creature named Mokona (whom Umi really didn’t get along with), the girls stumbled upon a town where the people live in constant fear. At that moment, Umi was suddenly attacked from behind by Alcyone and received fatal wounds. Watching Hikaru fight a losing battle, Umi felt desperate and wished she could cast magic. Clef contacted her telepathically and eventually granted her magic. Using her new magic, Water Dragon, Umi defeated and drove Alcyone away. She’s later healed with Fuu’s newfound magic, Winds of Healing. In the manga, however, the encounter occurred right before separating with Ferio.

The girls managed to obtain Escudo and brought them back to Presea, but right after she created the weapons, she was killed by another of Zagato’s minions, Ascot. The girls continued with their journey to their next target to become Magic Knights is to revive the Rune-Gods. As they journeyed, they gradually became best friends.

In the anime, Umi was constantly haunted with the fencing tournament. She often had nightmares about her in the tournament, but for some reason, she was always defeated even though it was obvious she had the edge. When she woke up, she wished her journey was the dream instead. When the girls were attacked again by Alcyone, Umi accidentally evaded it and because she wished so hard to return, she was stuck in an imaginary world created by her heart, which looked like the real world except that everything did not move at all. After she heard Hikaru’s screams, Umi realized that she had to help them and was able to return to Cephiro. When fighting Alcyone alone, her sword evolved and she dispatched Alcyone single-handedly. At that point, Umi put aside her desire to return to the real world quickly, and dedicated herself to save Cephiro first.

Umi was the first to revive her Rune-God, Selece. Her test involved about whether she had to choose over helping her friends, who were under attack by Ascot, or embrace with the ritual to achieve the Rune-God’s power. Eventually Umi chose the first and declared that she didn’t need a Rune-God if it meant to desert her friends. This, however, was the purpose of the test and she passed it. Selece awoke and granted his strength to the Magic Knights, but he would vanish until the other Rune-Gods awakened. In the manga, during the test, Umi became angry at Ascot about misusing his beast friends as monsters, to the point that she eventually slapped him. Even so, she still kindly asked him to be their friend, and Ascot eventually accepted the offer, defecting from Zagato’s side. In the anime, this event takes place in a journey shortly after reviving Selece.

Eventually, the girls were able to revive all the Rune-Gods and defeated Zagato. However, this just incited the anger of Emeraude, who had fallen in love with Zagato. The Magic Knights were attacked, and after Emeraude told them the whole truth and the purpose of her summoning was to kill her, the girls had no choice but to kill her. Emeraude was at peace and the girls returned to their world. However, their hearts were filled with grief due to the shockingly sad event.

  Season 2

Returning to Earth, Umi wasn’t quite as her usual self, as she was prone on staring into a blank space occasionally. Strangely, her parents misinterpreted her situation and suggested that she finds a boyfriend. Of course, Umi dismissed it. She later made a personal trip to Tokyo Tower, reuniting with Hikaru and Fuu. When Hikaru wished that she could get back to Cephiro, Umi and Fuu also agreed and suddenly they were transported to Cephiro. Due to the lack of Pillar (Emeraude’s position) the world was in crumbling state and three other worlds, Autozam, Chizeta, and Fahren, attempted to take over. The girls must defend Cephiro and look for a new Pillar before Cephiro crumbled.

Umi helped in defending Cephiro from the invaders, and found herself fighting the Chizeta faction the most. Ascot also developed romantic feelings to her, although Umi was interested in Clef.

In the anime, this was given more depth. When Hikaru’s sword was snapped by Nova, Umi and Fuu had to fend off the invaders themselves. However, Umi was captured by the Chizeta faction. She developed a rivalry with and fought with the two sisters, Tatra and Tarta. A small friendship was formed between them, but eventually Umi escaped. Later, she was challenged by the two sisters. Umi fought both of them one by one and was able to best them, solidifying their friendship. Umi would later join Hikaru and Fuu to destroy the culprit behind the chaos, Debonair. After they succeeded, Cephiro returned to its tranquil state and the girls were able to return with satisfaction.

Love Interests

Literally, in the anime Umi was quite interested with Clef, and at the end of it, she almost declared love to him, but she feared it was unrequited. On the other hand, Ascot developed a heavy crush on her and helped her a lot. He even said he didn’t mind his love being unrequited, as long as he could feel that way. In the manga, Umi didn’t show any obvious interest in either Ascot or Clef but both are still considered ‘her’ love interests.

Family

Umi was born from rich parents. She’s the sole daughter of the family and her parents doted on and spoiled her, resulting in her having great affection for them. This was also the cause of her early spoiled and uncaring personality during the start of the series. However, the situation demanded Umi to mature on her own, and she did develop her own personality.

[edit] Spells

Umi specialized in Water Magic. Her magics include:

  • “Water Dragon” (Mizu no Ryuu): This is Umi’s first spell that was created in order to save Hikaru from Alcyone. With it, Umi calls forth a Dragon of Water that’s able to attack the enemy. It’s also suggested that this spell can change the atmosphere by causing rain.
  • “Sapphire Whirlwind” (Aoi Tatsumaki): Umi’s second spell. This spell calls forth a Whirlwind of water. This can be used to attack an enemy however, once it was used to save the Chizeta Princess Tarta from falling off a dueling arena.
  • “Icicle Blades” (Koori no Yaiba): This is Umi’s last attack spell. With this spell, Umi rains down a barrage of ice and water at the enemy. This is her only ice-based elemental spell, however it is arguably her most powerful.

–Because Umi is attributed to water, Umi is built more for speed and effecting the enemy.

Fuu Hououji - the wind goddess

Fuu Hououji (鳳凰寺 風 Hōōji Fū) is a fictional character from the anime/manga series Magic Knight Rayearth (created by Clamp). She’s one of the three protagonists of the series and wields the element of Wind. A short-haired girl mostly wearing glasses, Fuu is often considered “the smart, calm one” and “the polite one” (calling people with the suffix -san or “Mr” or “Miss”) between the trio although she has an odd sense of humor. She’s voiced by Hiroko Kasahara in the Japanese version of the anime and Bridget Hoffman in the English version.

Fuu attended a private school for intellectually-gifted children. She was on a school trip to Tokyo Tower when she saw an energetic girl enjoying the scenery through the telescope. This girl is Hikaru Shidou, though Fuu didn’t know her. When she saw her running out of money to continue viewing, Fuu approached her and gave her spare tokens to continue the journey. Only moments after she left, she heard a voice calling her out as Magic Knight. In instant, along with Hikaru and another girl named Umi Ryuuzaki, Fuu was transported to Cephiro. Despite everyone else looking panicked, Fuu remained calm and was the one to initiate the three to introduce each other.

The girls met the Master Mage Clef shortly after and he told them the plight of Cephiro, starting from Princess Emeraude’s imprisonment by High Priest Zagato. The only way for them to go home was to save Cephiro. Fuu decided to just “play along”, unlike Hikaru who was more than willing to save Cephiro, or Umi who kept insisting to return back to Earth. Unfortunately, Zagato’s minion Alcyone attacked them and the girls had to flee. She gave pursuit, but was eventually driven back by Hikaru’s magic.

The girls was soon sent to Legendary Spring of Eterna by Presea to obtain the Legendary Minerals of Escudo. On the way, while traveling inside the Forest of Silence, they met a swordsman named Ferio whom Fuu eventually persuaded into their bodyguards. After this, the outcome differed between the anime and manga.

  • In the anime, they stumbled upon a stone that turned nearby animals to monsters and also dragged humans that tried to attack it and turn them to stone. While Hikaru and Umi distracted the monsters, Fuu and Ferio were about to destroy to stone, but Ferio, being a close-ranged fighter, ended up being dragged to the stone. After urging Fuu to believe in herself, she took her bow and shot a sure shot to the stone, destroying it. After this battle, they managed to exit the Forest of Silence. Ferio gave the girls a certain box, in which he claimed that it may grant a wish to come true, and left. However, Fuu started to develop small feelings to him.
  • In the manga, the encounter with the stone didn’t happen. However, right after exiting the forest, Alcyone ambushed and wounded Umi from behind. While Hikaru fought a losing battle, Ferio became desperate and wanted to help, but Fuu stopped him, saying that it’s Hikaru’s fight. Eventually, Umi couldn’t take it anymore and managed to acquire her magic and ultimately drove Alcyone away. Looking at Umi’s wounds, Fuu also wished for magic and soon Clef gave it to her through telepathic link. With her spell, she healed Umi’s wounds. Ferio also departed at that point, but not before he gave a ring to Fuu, causing her to blush heavily and even lost her sense of direction for a short moment.

The girls eventually obtained the mineral of Escudo and brought them back to Presea. In the anime, she’s killed by Ascot’s monsters while completing the weapons, but in the manga, the attack didn’t exist. The girls now journeyed to revive the Rune-Gods. As they journeyed they grew into best friends.

In the anime only, the girls decided to use the box Ferio gave to them. It turned out to be a communicating device to Ferio himself, and while Hikaru and Umi’s wishes were deemed to be “stupid and loud” by Ferio, he was stunned with Fuu’s wish, who just wanted him to be safe. The girls later met Ferio again, secretly under the contract of Ascot to lure the girls to the desert. Although it looked like he would betray them, he ended up helping them. Unfortunately for him, Ascot caught him red-handed and used him as a hostage to lure the girls again. During the night, Fuu left her friends alone to save Ferio. They ended up helping each other to survive, and eventually after Ferio used himself as a bait to the monster, which was sensitive to sounds, using Hikaru and Umi’s wishes recorded in his communicator, and told Fuu to run, she didn’t run and resolved to fight. This results her sword to evolve and finished Ascot’s monster in one blow. Afterwards, Ferio left again, but he would occasionally help the girls.

Fuu was the second to revive her Rune-God, Windam. The events differ greatly between the anime and manga.

  • In the anime, the girls met Ferio again, this time taking care of a girl named Selena. Although he was just “taking care” of her, Fuu grew jealous on her and left with her hearts in doubt. Unfortunately for Ferio, these were all a trap set by Zagato’s minion Innouva (an anime-only character). When Fuu confronted Windam, Innouva knocked Hikaru and Umi away and fought Fuu before revealing that he had Ferio as a hostage, and told her to choose between Ferio’s life or Windam’s power. After several thinking, eventually Fuu chose to save Ferio. This proved her heart’s strength which Windam quickly acknowledged. He used his power to drive Innouva away, and eventually granted Fuu his powers, but would not be seen again until the last Rune-God is revived. In the end, Ferio was overcame with guilt and after a brief apologizing he left. But he later helped the girls to ultimately defeat Innouva through his communicator.
  • In the manga, the dancer Caldina used her dance to brainwash Hikaru and Umi, and she had them fight Fuu in front of Windam. She tried her best not to injure her friends to the point that she developed a new spell to immobilize both of them. Caldina then manipulated Fuu with her dance, directing her to attack Hikaru and Umi. However, Fuu was merely “playing along” with Caldina’s tricks and ended up blasting her with magic. Shortly after, Caldina repented her ways and walked away in a friendly note, and Windam also acknowledged Fuu’s heart strength. This event also happened in the anime, but it has nothing to do with the test.

 Season 2

While returning to Earth, Fuu acted rather normal, but she still harbored her grief within her heart. Eventually she revisited Tokyo Tower to reunite with Hikaru and Umi. After Hikaru declared that she wanted to return to Cephiro, they were brought there in instant. The exception was that due to the lack of Pillar (Emeraude’s position) the world was in crumbling state and three other worlds, Autozam, Chizeta, and Fahren, attempted to take over. The girls must defend Cephiro and look for a new Pillar before Cephiro crumbled.

In these series of events, Fuu helped in defending Cephiro. She also found out that Ferio was actually the little brother of Emeraude, making him Cephiro’s Prince.

In the anime, more depth was given. When Hikaru’s sword was broken thanks to Nova, Umi and Fuu was left to defend Cephiro on their own. Unfortunately, she was captured by the Fahren faction. In there, she struck a deal with its ruler Lady Aska into an archery match. If she wins, she’s about to be freed but if she lost, they can do whatever they like. Fuu ended up winning and told Aska the truth of being the Pillar of Cephiro, which casted doubts on Aska’s ambitions. Just then, Ferio busted in to save Fuu. However, her words eventually made Aska cancel her dream to take over Cephiro’s Pillar position, knowing that she still love Fahren. Fuu later joined Hikaru and Umi to destroy the individual behind the chaos, Debonair. When they did, they returned to Earth, unable to come back to Cephiro anymore. However, they were satisfied that Cephiro returned to its peaceful state and beautiful form, and it was able to function on their own.

 Love Interest

Fuu has only one love interest in the series, and that is Ferio. However, their relationship is the one that looks the most obvious in the series. She is very sad when she finds out that Ferio is Emeraude’s brother, but he forgives her quickly and their relationship continues to grow. Unfortunately, they have to separate when Debonair is defeated. However, they won’t forget each other. But in the manga, the girls can go to Cephiro whenever they want. So Fuu and Ferio are able to stay together.

 Family

Not much is known about Fuu’s parents. However she does have an elder sister named Kuu. Kuu has an obsession with a certain cake sold in Tokyo Tower and always asks Fuu to buy one whenever she visits the Tower.

 Spells

Fuu’s magics revolves around the Wind Element. Her spells include:

  • “Winds of Healing” (Iyashi no Kaze): A healing spell. Fuu covers her target with soothing winds, healing them.
  • “Emerald Typhoon” (Midori no Shippu): Fuu’s first and most used attack spell. She sends out a strong gust of wind towards the enemy.
  • “Winds of Abdonishment”(Imashime no Kaze): Fuu covers her enemies within winds and immobilized them.
  • “Winds of Protection” (Mamori no Kaze): Fuu protects herself and her allies with a barrier of wind.
  • “Emerald Cyclone” (Midori no Zenpuu): This spell was made in the anime only. Basically, it’s Fuu’s strongest attack spell which spends out simultaneous gusts of wind that seem as sharp as blades.

Because Fuu is attributed to Wind, her magic is mainly used for defense. Her attributed wind may also be a factoring reason why she has the most spells.

Aya Natsume - the fantastic killer

Aya anime.jpg

Aya is the younger sister of Shin Natsume, and Maya Natsume. She is a freshman at Toudou Academy. She has brown hair (auburn in the anime). She is instantly infatuated with Souichiro Nagi when he crashes into the shower room, insisting that he marry her, as it is a tradition of the Natsume women that the first man to see her unclothed must become her husband. She pursues him relentlessly throughout the series despite his vehement protests. This attraction to Souichiro also leads to a rift between her and her sister, as Souichiro is in love with Maya.

Masataka Takayanagi is also in love with Aya, but she has shown no interest in him. However, she does respect him for his strength, skill, dedication, and typically calm nature. She eventually entrusts him to guard the computer chip that F is after.

Throughout the Manga, it is shown that Souichiro and Aya have some sort of mental connection between them that calls to the other when they are in trouble. [1][2][3][4] This could be due to their powers complimenting each other, since Nagi’s dragon’s fist can collect and supply huge amounts of ki and Aya’s dragon’s eye can consume an unlimited supply of ki.

[edit] Techniques & Abilities

Aya fights with the Natsume family style just like her sister.[5] It is called Natsume Goushin Ryuu.

Techniques

Returning the Scabard[5]
A staff technique of the Natsume family, used to throw an opponent holding a staff to the ground and steal their staff.
Natsume Goshin Ryu Secret Technique; Bamboo Grass Summer Rain[6]
A sword technique that transmits attacks through the wind.

Aya’s activated Dragon’s Eyes

Dragon’s Eye

Aya has the power of the Dragon’s Eye (龍眼 ryuu me or ryuugan?), which synchronizes with the spirits of all things[7], thus it gives Aya a type of prescience that allowed her to see anywhere past, present, possible futures; as well as seeing and hearing the dead. Aya can also use her Dragon’s Eye to astral project and to use psychometry with Shin’s motocycle. The Dragon’s Eye is known for its capacity to consume ki indefinitely, so sustaining it too long can cause the user to lose consciousness. Her powers fully awakened around the time she entered high school, unlike her brother who awakened his power when he was still a boy. Although when younger she showed signs of her ability, since she was able to hear her dead parents voices when they were speaking to Shin.

Swordsmanship

Aya has an affinity for katanas, and is fairly skilled with them. She isn’t as skilled as someone like Madoka Mawari, nor does she seem as good as her sister. Aya’s first katana was shattered by Ryuzaki, and after a brief time in possession of Reiki, she borrows other swords.

Reiki

Aya has developed a relationship with Reiki, a ceremonial Nodachi, that is her family’s heir loom. Her sister is the current guardian of the blade, but as Reiki has its’ own spirit, Aya’s Dragon Eyes have enabled her to speak to it. Reiki seems to indicate the two will eventually become one, so Aya may indeed gain possession of the Reiki eventually. This is also supported by Ms. Hotaru who calls Aya the blade’s “true master”[8].Unlike Maya, Aya actually has a special power and thus can activate Reiki’s power even though her sister can not.

Aya actually indicates Reiki is a part of her body, furthering the connection between the two. She has even recently managed to turn her hair into the Reiki, the method however is unclear.

Tamahome - the destined one

Tamahome

Tamahome (鬼宿?), the first of the seven Celestial Warriors of Suzaku whom Miaka meets, comes into the story when he saves Miaka and Yui from slave-traders. Born in the Hokkan (Bei-Jiang) Village of the Juusou (Shou-Shuang) Prefecture of Kounan (Hong-nan) as the eldest son of a large family, he is seventeen years old. His true name is Kishuku Sou (琮 鬼宿 Sō Kishuku?) , based on the star Demon (鬼).

Tamahome appears the strongest member of the Suzaku warriors. An adept martial artist, proficient unarmed and with weapons, he proves a good street-fighter and can channel his ki into energy-blasts. When emotionally motivated, he is able to use his ki to increase his strength, speed, and reflexes in combat. Tamahome is also experienced in fencing thanks to being trained by Tokaki.

Initially, the story portrays Tamahome as a greedy young man, interested in helping others only if it means getting paid for it later. It is eventually revealed that his interest in accumulating money derives from trying to support his family. He comes across as cheerful, vain, and comic, but is actually shy and emotionally strong. Throughout the series, he demonstrates himself to be a sincere young man who is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of others and unwilling to back down from enemies.

While he initially rejects Miaka’s feelings for him, he comes to reciprocate, though does not pursue his feelings for her until Suboshi kills his family. They develop a strong romantic relationship to the point where Tamahome is able to hear Miaka when she calls for him. Though it is Miaka’s wish for them to be together, it is a wish that Suzaku cannot grant; thus, Miaka uses her final wish to restore The Universe of Four Gods and the two are separated when Miaka returns to her own world. However, after Miaka’s junior high school graduation, she is introduced to a new classmate of her older brother. Tamahome comes back showing the ring that symbolizes his marriage to Miaka.
